What is Queer & Christian Without Contadiction?

In 2006, the Student Christian Movement of Canada (SCM) launched a national campaign to support and empower lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans-identified, two-spirited and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) youth – in and out of the churches. We work with allies in campus LGBTQ service centres, churches, chaplains and non-government organizations to build a culture of respect for LGBTQ rights and safer spaces for queer people to engage.

Our commitment to this campaign comes from the SCM’s Anti-Oppression Covenant, which recognizes that all forms of oppression are interconnected and must be resisted in and by our communities. We hope that Queer & Christian Without Contradiction creates safer spaces for you and your communities to engage in dialogue, exploration and liberation.

The campaign features:

  • Stop Homophobia in the Churches: A pamphlet and web resource reclaiming the Bible to liberate and affirm LGBTQ Christians.
  • Shine!: Our major gathering of the campaign, on the theme “Radiating a Vision of Inclusion and Liberation” (Toronto, May 2-10, 2009)
  • Queer & Christian Bible Studies: Created by students across Canada, this resource examines key Bible passages to support queer identities
  • Que(e)rying Religion Activity Guide: A collection of student-tested events and activities to bring the campaign to your campus or community.
  • Online forums for discussion
  • Buttons: 6 designs on the campaign theme and other anti-oppression messages
  • Queer Book study: Engages a contemporary novel about queer, Christian identity with a discussion guide
  • Documentary: This film will document the 4-year campaign (2010)
  • Interactive Workshops available in your area about the campaign, anti-homophobia, theology, anti-oppression or related topics.

We invite all students – from whatever background – to join the campaign, which offers resources, Bible studies, national gatherings and other creative materials to get our message out. QACWC is supported by the SCM and is funded by the Liberty Hill Foundation’s Queer Youth Fund.

What is the Student Christian Movement?

SCM is a student-led ecumenical movement passionate about justice, community & spirituality.

SCM’s vision is to realize liberation and justice in this world by engaging and exploring the prophetic teachings of the revolutionary Jesus of Nazareth.

Our anti-oppression work extends from autonomous local units to global programmes through the World Student Christian Federation, rooted in our Living Prayer Mission.

Founded in 1921, SCM Canada is made up of students active in a liberating theology. We’re part of the global ecumenical (Christian unity) movement, and include members of many beliefs and backgrounds – we take action together for social justice, dialogue, youth leadership and community in diversity. All are welcome, including LGBTQ.
